A while ago, I read one of
Dean Koontz's many novels, in which one of the leading female
characters liked driving with her pet jade plant, named Fred. Fred
was a sizable specimen who filled a 12-inch pot. He traveled securely
strapped in with a seat belt. His owner thought he was a wonderful
listener, much better than any of her boyfriends. (The fact that she
often resorted to biting humor and sarcasm may have had a negative
impact on her boyfriends' communication style, but that is another
story.)
Many people love driving with
their dogs in the car, and others got married more for the fun of
sharing vacations with their significant other than anything else.
Jack Paar usually spent his retirement from the Tonight Show driving
around town with his beloved dogs in the car.
I used to work with a woman
who took many trips both before and after marrying her swell guy; I
guess she figured if their relationship could survive close quarters
in airplanes and hotels (not to mention the usual snafus), then they
would probably survive marriage.
A grandmother of my
acquaintance used to take her granddaughter with her on bus tours
during the girl's school breaks. It was a nice way for the two
generations to have special times in which to get better acquainted.
I am personally more of a
loner when traveling, since I like to be free to either walk about or
just cocoon in a hotel room at will. That doesn't mean I don't
cherish memories of family car trips in the summers of my youth. They
were all special in different ways.
Who do you love to travel
with and why?
